Laser Cut File Quality Checklist

Twelve checks for moving a vector design from screen to reliable plywood assembly. Use this page before a full cut, then record the material, machine settings, and joint test that produced the final fit.

No digital file can guarantee the same fit on every machine and material. Measure the actual sheet and test the critical joint first.

THE RELEASE STANDARD

A production file must explain more than its shape.

Geometry, units, material assumptions, operation layers, scale, and assembly intent must agree. When they do, a maker can identify problems before material is wasted and reproduce a successful result later.

    Measure the actual material

    Use calipers in several places. Nominal 3 mm plywood can vary by batch, supplier, coating, and veneer.

    Run a kerf and joint coupon

    Test the intended material with the planned machine settings before committing a full sheet.

    Confirm 1:1 scale and units

    Verify one known dimension after every export and import, especially when moving between millimeters and inches.

    Close every cut contour

    Locate open endpoints while keeping intentionally open engraving and scoring lines clearly separated.

    Remove duplicate vectors

    Check copied, mirrored, arrayed, and shared-edge geometry so the machine does not cut an edge twice.

    Separate production operations

    Use clear layers or groups for cutting, scoring, line engraving, and filled engraving.

    Clean nodes and tiny fragments

    Simplify excessive nodes and remove spikes, zero-length segments, microscopic loops, and weak decorative bridges.

    Audit every tab and slot

    Confirm each mating pair, joint depth, clearance, grain direction, finish allowance, and assembly order.

    Use corner relief intentionally

    Add dog-bone or T-bone relief only when the joint geometry needs it; oversized relief can weaken the part.

    Nest for safe production

    Balance material efficiency with heat, hold-down, part movement, cut order, and safe removal.

    Test the critical joint

    Cut the most important slot, tab, hinge, or layered alignment feature before the complete project.

    Verify every delivery format

    Open SVG, DXF, PDF, EPS, AI, CDR, or other supplied formats separately and confirm scale, curves, layers, and text.
